FamilyBoost Childcare Initiative

From 1 July 2024, a new government initiative, FamilyBoost, is dsigned to make life easier for families with young children. If your household meets the criteria, you can receive up to 25% off your weekly childcare fees – that’s up to $975 every three months!

Who Can Benefit?
To qualify for FamilyBoost, you must meet the following criteria:
  • Caregiver of a child aged 5 or under
  • Household income of less than $180,000 per year
  • Childcare fees paid to a licensed Early Childhood Education (ECE) provider
  • You are a New Zealand tax resident

How Much Can You Claim?
The amount you can claim depends on your household income. For example, families earning up to $140,000 annually can claim the maximum refund of $975 per quarter. For incomes over this threshold, the refund gradually decreases until reaching a limit for those with incomes up to $180,000.

Easy Claim Process
You’ll be able to register for FamilyBoost through myIR starting in mid-September 2024. Keep your ECE provider invoices handy, and be ready to submit your claim for the first quarter (July–September) from 1 October 2024.

Regular Quarterly Claims
You can claim FamilyBoost every three months, so it’s important to keep records of your expenses. You’ll need to make a new claim for each quarter to ensure you get the support you deserve.

Additional Support
Even if you receive other subsidies, such as the Work and Income Childcare Subsidy, you can still claim FamilyBoost for any remaining out-of-pocket childcare expenses.

For more information or to check your eligibility, visit ird.govt.nz/FamilyBoost or call IRD on 0800 767 287. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to lighten your childcare costs!
