Lifelong Learning
Within the accounting industry, continual education is incredibly important and a mandatory requirement to ensure that we stay up to date with legislative changes, tax policy and reporting obligations. In addition to the ‘legalities’ continued learning means that we remain at the top of our game in a competitive industry by providing you our clients with innovative and strategic advice.
The option to study, however, can be SO much more. It creates new opportunities within your current workplace, provides the opportunity for career advancement and often leads to a sense of personal accomplishment. At Whutuporo we have three staff that are looking to expand their knowledge and to challenge themselves through seeking further qualifications.
Taking up new study when you are a business owner or later in life can be daunting and fearful. However Kerry wants to share his experience now in making his decision to seek another qualification as a way of inspiring others to do the same.
When the decision was made that I wanted to seek a new qualification there was a lot of questions going through my mind. Where do I start? How do I juggle study, work and family? What do I want to study? Am I mad?
If I can offer one piece of advice when returning to study...research, research, research!
I wanted to find something that was going to challenge me but also be worthwhile in my position and enable me to better serve my clients. I talked to several people, looked at what courses were out there, who were the providers and would it fit in with my work commitments, what reviews were available, how much study time is needed etc. Time now will prove worthwhile later that is for sure. When I found the right provider and course I jumped in and I am now an enrolled student again. Wonder if I will get student discounts? (sorry that is the accountant in me talking and always looking for a bargain)
Now that I have taken the plunge the fear of time crept in. This is a biggie particularly as a business owner and having just started the course I am finding my way through the time question. What I have done as a first step is to book out time in my diary where I will turn everything off including my phone and will focus on the study that is required to ensure I pass the exams I am facing. Will this work? Time will tell but I am going to be disciplined and make sure I stick to it.
In life there will also be doubts and fears, but they’re not reasons to stop you from challenging yourself, creating opportunities and achieve your dreams and goals. Are you brave enough to take the next step?
